Published in 1575 in the Cantiones Sacrae, a collection of 34 motets by Tallis and Byrd, O nata lux de lumine is one of Tallis’s most beloved choral works. The words, drawn from Roman Catholic service-books from Italy and France, tell of the vision the disciples had of Jesus, bathed in holy light. Its rich sonority, metrical ambiguity and use of false harmonic relations add an unearthly gleam to the music.
