Great renderings of Strozzi and Fontei,

A NEW SAPPHO is indeed a curious treat for Strozzi fans. Besides duo pieces by Barbara Strozzi herself, it features duos and solos by Nicolò Fontei, member of the "Accademia degli Unisoni". His pieces set to music Guilio Strozzi's texts, and were intended for Barbara to sing.
The singing is really beautiful and lively in the duos, although I wish a bit more passion were evident in the second solo. Even though I bought this for Strozzi, I have to admit my favorite piece is the first solo, "Felice nascità di core amante".

Strozzi and Fontei are heard seldomly, should be heard more. If you are a fan of what might be seen as the very beginnings of bel canto, or Renaissance part singing, you should buy this album. The performance' acoustics are also well-balanced, in fact, it is perfectly "harmonious," in conception and execution. If you are interested, you might also want to buy La virtuosissima cantatrice, which also features these composers.
